Spoils. Three cells, 22-5, 23-5, and 24-5 are completed in the upper region of spoils <br /> (below t he USGS 1980 lys imeter study site) which is generally unsaturated. YeLI 23-5 <br /> sometimes shows eater in late February, March, and April as snow melts quickly off this <br /> westerly facing slope. Yell 22-5 shooed a twa-foot increase in water level after a slug <br /> test in October, 1981 and increased slightly only during spring runoff. Yell 24-5 has <br /> been dry for the entire period of record. <br />Three wells, 25-5, 26-5, and 27-5 are situated in loner spoils adjacent to the Yadge <br />Impoundment which receives spoils eater discharge. All three of these cells were <br />outfitted with continuous recorders operated by the U 5 Geological Survey (USGS) until the <br />end of 1983. Yell 25-5, the highest upgradient of these three wells on the spoils slope, <br />indicated an absence of recharge in 1987, 1988, 1990, and 1991, but exhibited recharge in <br />1989. Yell 27-5, louesi of the three, shoos normal seasonal changes. The eater levels <br />in Yells 27-5 and 26-S are most likely dependent upon the water level in the Yadge <br />Impoundment located 50 to 100 feet away, respectively. These findings are also supported <br />by the USGS personnel operating the recorders prior to 1984. The low eater levels noted <br />in August 1987 at Yell 27-5 are likely a result of the loueri ng of the level of the Yadge <br />Impoundment from pumping for the truck cash facilities mentioned earlier in this text, <br /> <br />Seven new Spoil cells were completed in the fall of 1987. Three (Yell 54-5, 60-5, and <br />61-5) were completed upgradient of the Spoi Ls Spring #3 area, while four (Yells 62-5 to <br />65-5) were completed in the Spoils Spring #1 area (see Exhibit 7-2). The purpose of <br />placing several wells at each site was to accurately define the potentiometric surface of <br />the spoils aquifer at each location. This data will be presented in an upcoming USGS <br />report. These water levels exhibit normal seasonal variations. Yell 65-5 has been dry <br />for the entire period of record. It is located in an area where the spoils are <br />unsaturaietl. <br />Ground Yater Level Summary. All alluvial eel is are shooing distinct seasonal eater Level <br />fluctuations in response to .periods of precipitation recharge or the lack of <br />precipitation. Overburden and coal cell water levels are fluctuating in response to the <br />precipitation recharge, induced ground eater floe to the mine pits, and in some cases, <br /> changes in reservoir eater levels due to loner precipitation and mining-related usage. <br /> Spoil well eater leve ls still indicate that only the furthest dounsLope highuall portions <br /> of the spoil exhibit significant amounts of saturation. Levels in spoil wells near the <br /> Madge Impoundment are largely controlled by cater level fluctuations in the impoundment. <br />5 <br />
