R. G. OTTO & ASSOCIATES
~'.
o-
This initial study design was reassessed by Cotter staff in 1983
in response to concerns expressed by the Water Quality Control
Division:staff regarding possible impacts of the waste rock piles.
It was agreed that the proposed study design would not adequately
define surface or groundwater impacts from the waste rock piles
and, in September 1983, two additional sampling locations were
included: (1) at a point in the stream between the waste rock
piles and the water treatment plant discharge and (2) pit a well
drilled downslope of the waste rock piles especially for this
purpose. Water Quality Control Division staff partici)>ated in the
selection of these locations.
'~ Sampling at all six locations (the original four plus i;he well and
~'
additional stream location) was initiated in September 1983 and
concluded in September 1984. This report includes onl;~ that
information from the Cotter-USGS survey that is pertinent to the
evaluation of waste rock pile impacts.
Parameters Measured: The element of the Cotter-USGS st;ream survey
relating to the waste rock pile assessment includes coi:sideration
of sixteen (16) parameters (Table 2). These parametersc weze
selected is consultation with the Water Quality Contro]. Division
staff and include a series of three general water quality
descriptors (conductivity, pH and sulfate concentration) as well
as 13 trace metals thought to be characteristic of the highly
mineralized deposits is the Ralston Creek watershed.
14
