WATER QUALITY SAMPLING PROTOCOL
Procedure
With the recently approved Application for Permit Renewal (1997) for the
Keenesburg Mine, Coors Energy Company's (CEC) proposal to modify the
ground water sampling procedure (pages 56-57a) was accepted. CEC began
to employ the modified procedure with the fourth quarter, 1997 sample
collection. (Recall that the only real difference between previous and current
sampling is that now only one sample is collected from each well for
laboratory analysis. Field sample collection procedure, order of sampling,
field measurements, frequency, etc.; all of these protocols remain unchanged.)
CEC continues to perform the ground water sampling on a quarterly basis,
and the analytical laboratory work was again completed by Accu-Labs
Research, Inc. (Golden, Colorado) in 1997.
Ground Water Monitoring and Quality Analvsis
The formal grom~d water sampling program for the Keenesburg Mine was
initiated in 1992. Ground water quality information has been obtained from
several monitor wells, located above, below and within the disturbance area
of the Mine. The monitoring program provides a comparison of information
between a baseline and the existing site conditions relative to ground water
movement and water quality at the site.
The water quality test results, obtained from the data collected in the field a~~d
from the analytical ground water quality analyses, suggest that the overall
groundwater quality has not been adversely impacted by the Keenesburg
Mine operation or the current recalmation activities (to include the ash
disposal operation). Further, general gromid water flow patterns to not
appear to have been significantly influenced (or intemtpted) by the past
mining activity or the current existence of the ash disposal pits.
During 1997 six ground water monitor wells were sampled by CEC on a
quarterly basis. These wells are designated AMW-l, AMW-2, DH-96, DH-
122, FPW and SMW-2. Water quality analysis includes both the field and
analytical laboratory testing of water samples collected from these wells.
AHR-1997 -40- Stipulation #5
