- 4 -
the simplified Bishop method was used for the purpose. The
method of the analysis is described in the Appendix A; the
results are presented and discussed in the report.
2.0 SITE CONDITIONS WITHIN THE LANDSLIDE AREA
2.1 GEOLOGIC CONDITIONS
Geologic conditions of the area have been discussed in our
Progress Report. Drilling of the borings at the mine entries
and along the road alignment shows erratic geologic conditions
as can be expected within a landslide area. Considerable soil
cover has been detected in most borings; it can be assumed that
these soils comprise largely landslide deposits. Soil cover
thickness ranges generally between 20 to 30 feet; in one of the
borings along the road alignment (boring A-6), bedrock could not
be reached even at the depth of 74 feet.
Thickness of soils may increase within the part where the
mine bench will be located; all piezometer holes in this area
were drilled in soils to depths up to 38 feet.
We can conclude that most excavations on the site will be
performed in soils rather than in rock; there is enough support-
ing data for this conclusion at the proposed mine bench area.
Borings drilled along the road indicate soil deposits of sig-
nificant thickness as well, but it cannot be excluded that rocks
will be encountered along the road during the excavation of
higher cuts.
Data from borings drilled for our purpose and data from old
ARCO exploration drilling enable a quite accurate interpretation
oewno.ocawuw nc
