readily apparent in 1991, though nowhere abundant. Most reclaimed areas had at least small <br />amounts of serviceberry, chokecherry, and prickly rose or Wood's rose. Antelope bitterbrush <br />was present in very small amounts in the 1984 Wolf Creek area. Rubber rabbitbrush was <br />found in the 1984 and 1987 Wadge and the Wadge Pasture areas. <br />Although the density of shrubs in the reference areas was not directly relevant since <br />performance standards are set at 1000 stems per acre, the reference area densities may <br />,, <br />nonetheless be of some general interest. In the Mountain Brush reference area, total stem <br />density was 4775.5 stems per acre, of which the major contributors were serviceberry, <br />chokecherry, mountain snowberry, and Gambel's oak. In the Sagebrush reference area, total <br />stem density was 3766.4 stems per acre, the most important contributors to which were <br />mountain big sagebrush, Douglas rabbitbrush, and mountain snowberry. <br />Data from Shrub Density Area No. 1 (planted in 1989) show that there were only 68.8 shrub <br />stems per acre, which, though low, was higher than the 18.8 stems per acre in the adjacent <br />unplanted 1989 Wadge areas. The shrub density of the Shrub Density Area No. 2 (planted in <br />1986) was 210.4 stems per acre, a figure comparable to the levels observed this year in the <br />1987 Wadge reclamation, and the average for 1986 Wadge reclaimed areas sampled in 1990. <br />It should be noted that because shrub sample data are so highly variable, the confidence limits <br />associated with these data are often from 100 to 200, or even more stems, per acre. <br />Species Density and Species Composition <br />Tables 1 through 9 show species density date from each cover sample; these date are <br />summarized in Table 29 and are graphically depicted in Figure 4. <br />Species composition, as reflected in cover data, is presented in Tables 1 through 9. Table 30 <br />summarizes the relative cover data from these tables by lifeiorm and provenance. Figure 5 <br />graphically depicts these same data. <br />Species and lifeform density data reflect both total species/lifeform richness and equilability. <br />The latter is incorporated by virtue of the tact that the occurrence of species is tallied within <br />fixed unit areas (100 m2), and thus frequency is addressed simultaneously with species <br />richness. The highest total species density of all reclaimed areas was observed in the 1987 <br />Wolf Creek reclaimed area because it had the highest complement o1 native species. <br />9 <br />
