• RESULTS
Data from the 1991 revegetation monitoring studies at the Seneca II Mine are presented in
tables contained in Appendix 1. Lists of plant species observed during these studies in the
reclaimed and reference areas are included in Table 32 of Appendix 2. Seed mixes applied on
areas revegetated prior to 1981 and in years 1981 through 1989 are included for reference in
Appendix 3. Photographs of representative locations within the reclaimed areas sampled in
1991, as well as photos of the Mountain Brush and Sagebrush reference areas are included in
Appendix 4. Graphic depiction of summaries of vegetation data, precipitation, and total degree
days are presented in Figures 1-10 on pages 21-30 of this report.
Cover
Cover data from the seven reclaimed areas and two reference areas are shown in Tables 1
through 9. Shown in each table are absolute top layer foliar cover (first hit cover), frequency
by species, and relative top layer vegetation cover by species, all organized by
lifeform/provenance categories. In addition, absolute all-hit cover and relative cover based
on all-hit data are presented in these tables. All-hit data include first hits combined with
additional hits below first hits, thus giving an accounting of cover conditions for all vegetation
layers or strata.
Figure 1 graphically depicts the summarized cover data tabulated in Table 28, comparing
cover values to Mountain Brush and Sagebrush Reference Area standards. Cover (plus the
confidence limit) in the 1984 Wolf Creek and Wadge Pasture exceed the cover standard set by
90 percent of the Sagebrush Reference Area. The 1984 Wadge comes within 0.4 percent of
meeting that standard. Cover (plus the confidence limit) in the Wadge Pasture area also
exceeds the confidence set by 90 percent of the Mountain Brush Reference Area.
In 1991, the 1984 Wolf Creek and Wadge Pasture had the highest cover values, 71.7 to 78.6
percent, respectively. Not far behind was the 1964 Wadge area (65.7 percent cover). The
1987 Wadge was moderate with 62.5 percent cover. Lowest percent cover was found in the
youngest reclaimed areas. These included the 1987 Wolf Creek (60.0 percent cover), 1989
Wadge (59.5 percent cover), and 1989 Wolf Creek (60.1 percent cover) areas. Cover in the
Mountain Brush and Sagebrush Reference Areas was 85.7 and 78.6 percent, respectively.
•
6
