6
GILLESPIE HILL AND THE DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM
During the past years, Gillespie Hill has been nothing but a waste dump
area. Until 1978 no reclamation had been done to the area. In 1978 approximately
500 Pinon Pine and 500 Juniper were planted during tli''' The seedlings
cover an area of about 4 acres and were planted in a sterile and rocky plant
growth media. The Pinon seedlings were 1 year stock and the Juniper 3 year stock.
The Pinon trees were of poor quality and were not expected to survive. With the
aid of the drip irrigation system that was installed in 1978 and put into operation
during the summer of 1979, the seedlings are making a comeback. The system covers
an area of approximately .5 acres and supports 187 seedlings.
4.
