'
1988 Reclaimed Area. The area reclaimed in 1988 (Photo 2) is located in the western two-
thuds of the property and covers approximately 83 acres (Map 1). The major species in the 1988
reclaimed area include Russian wildrye (22 percent mean cover; 71.9 percent relative cover) and
thickspike wheatgrass (6.2 percent mean cover; 20.1 percent relative cover). The remaining eight
percent of the cover was distributed among 17 other species (Table 4). Big sagebrush was the
' third most prevalent species with a mean cover of 1.6 percent and occurring along 75 percent of the
transacts. Mean total vegetation cover was 30.6 percent, cover by fitter and rock combined was
47.8 percent, bare soil cover was 21.6 percent and total ground cover was 78.4 percent. Species
diversity had a mean value of 3.25 species per transact.
Mean total production in the 1988 reclaimed azea was 84.6 g/mr with Russian wildrye and
thickspike wheatgrass accounting for 94.9 percent of the total (Table 5). The remainder of Ure
' biomass was distributed among nine other species.
Mean total shrub density in this azea was 3026 individuals per acre with big sagebrush
accounting for 86 percent of the total. Six other species were encountered (Table 11).
Grassland Reference Area. The grassland reference area (Photo 3) is located on a low
ridge in the southwest portion of the site. The major species in this area include needle-and-thread
grass (Stipa comata), thickspike wheatgrass, a low-growing species of rabbitbrush
' (Chrysothamnus vaseyi), Hoods phlox (Phlox hoodii) and nailwort (Paronychia sessiliJloraJ.
These 5ve species accounted for 59 percent of the wver by all species, which was 28.4 percent.
The remaining 41 percent of the cover was distributed among 23 other species (Table 6). A
' species of foliose ground lichen (Parmelia chlorochroa) had a mean cover of 10.9 percent. Mean
total vegetation cover was 28.4 percent, cover by litter and rock combined was 44.8 percent, bare
soil cover was 24.7 and total ground cover was 75.3 percent. Species diversity had a mean value
' of 9.33 species per transact.
Mean total production was 36 g/m' with 81 percent of the total being attributable to cool
' season perennial grasses. Major species included tlrickspike wheatgrass, needle-and-thread grass
and prairie Junegrass (fable 7)
.
Bia Sagebrush Reference Area. The big sagebrush reference area (Photo 4) is located on a
gentle north-facing slope adjacent to the north side of the grassland reference area (Map 1). The
major species in this reference azea include big sagebrush, Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoetuisJ,
' clubflower (Cordylanthus wrightii), Letterman needlegrass (Stlpa lettermanii) and a species of
rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus vaseyi). These 5ve species accounted for 86.5 percent of the cover
by all species (Table 8). The remaining 13.5 percent of the cover was distributed among 30 other
species. Big sagebrush accounted for 45.7 percent of the cover by all species. Mean total
vegetation cover was 42.6 percent, cover by litter and rock combined was 49 percent, baze soil
cover was 8.4 percent and total ground cover was 91.6 percent. Species diversity had a mean
value of 7.6 species per transact.
' Mean total production was 45.2 g/mr with 85.4 percent of the total attributable to cool
season perennial grasses (Table 9). Major species included Idaho fescue, prairie Junegrass and
thickspike wheatgrbcs. Most of the rema~!!ing biomass was attributable to annual forts (mostly
' clubflower).
1

' -3-
