Marcb 2004 2003 Anneal Hyr/rolaey ReDon ~ Poee 22
3.3 SURFACE WATER MONITORING RESULTS
3.3.1 Mine Area
The Mine and adjacent areas fall within the lower portions of the Magpie and Newlin creek drainages
and encompass the central portion of the Second Alkali Creek drainage, all of which are [ributary to
the Arkansas River. Newlin Creek is a perennial drainage above the mine property to the diversion
point for the City of Florence Municipal Water Supply. Within the mine property, flows in Newlin,
Magpie, and Second Alkali creeks are all ephemeral (refer to Section 2.04.7 of the Southfield Mining
and Reclamation Plan document for more details). EFCI monitors stream flows in Newlin, Magpie,
and Second Alkali creeks. EFCI also monitors any stormwater runoff discharge from active
sedimentation stmctures and historically monitored any mine water discharge from the mine water
treatment system, which included Fresh Water Pond No. 3, under the terms of an approved CDPS
Permit. In addition to the mine water treatment and storage ponds, there were originally three
sedimentation ponds, Sedimentation Ponds 1, 4, and 5, in the Mine Area.
In the Mine Area, the current surface water monitoring program includes the following monitoring
stations, located as shown on Figure 1, Mine Monitoring Locations:
. Section 19 Pond 5 Outlet (Newlin)
T20S, R69W
' Monitoring Stations 001 (Pond 1 Outlet to Magpie Creek) and 003 (Pond 3 Outlet to Magpie Creek)
were previously included in the monitoring program. Ponds 1, 2, and 3 have, however, been removed
and reclaimed in conjunction with final mine reclamation activities, and Stations 001 and 003 have
' been eliminated from ongoing monitoring. EFCI also no longer includes data from the single
monitoring point that existed on Newlin Creek prior to second quarter of 1997, when the two current
monitoring points were established. Data from the original Newlin Creek monitoring point (NC-1)
' was included in previous Annual Hydrology Reports. Field and laboratory analysis data for surface
water momtonng stations are summarized in the following discussions. Raw field and laboratory data
for the 2003 water year are provided for reference in Appendices A and B.
' Historic stream flow measurements for Newlin, Magpie, and Second Alkali creeks are summarized in
Table 9, Streamflow Measurements. Due to continuing drought conditions, the limited precipitation
' received during the 2003 water near was not sufficient to generate typical ephemeral flows in Newlin,
MIlYH * 7475 Pine Grove RooA .Suite 109 * S/emnGoat .Springr, CO 80487 * (970J 379-6260
ire ~rp;dW=.~ r,~.,,m! un.o.n i9+,..,, ~rl ^an n.....e u,a iy„
umnw .m
