Precip.
One monitoring well remaims from the 15 wells that once made up the monitoring program. The
monitoring program has been reduced through technical revisions. The Division is not concerned
that there will be adverse groundwater quality effects caused by the bacld'illed spoils. The spoils
water analysis in past AHRs show that the water is of better quality with respect to T.D.S. than
down-gradient water samples.
Quarterly Pond Inspections
Also contained in the AHR were the quarterly pond/ impoundment monitoring reports. During the
last quarterly inspection minor problems were noted with rodent burrows, minor erosion and a
partially obstructed outfall of the principal spillway of pond #l. On pond 2# minor erosion and
sparse vegetation on embankments were listed as problems. The report contained recommendations
but did not say if the recommendations were carried out. Also, the report did not specify a timetable
for implementing the recommendations. The Canadian Strip Mine should take some action to
remedy the problems.
The Canadian Strip Mine is in compliance with the reporting requirements for the submittal an
annual hydrology report (Rule 4.05.13(4)(c)). However, action should be taken on the maintenance
problems. Canadian should submit to the Division a list of actions and timetable, before
February 5, 1993, for fining the problems.
If you have any questions please feel free to call me.
Sincerely,
~-t..
Randall P. Price
Reclamation Specialist
RPP/rpp /canahr92.wp
c: Jerry Koblitz
2
