Seedin
• The seed mixture, as approved in the Permit, was applied in September and
October. For details as to the location of the seeded areas, refer to Exhibit 9 - 2000
Annual Report Map.
In cooperation with Colorado State University (CSU) and CDMG Colowyo
established a woody plant demonstration project in the East Pit 2000 reclamation
area. Please see the Exhibit 9 for the location of the site. The project consisted of
various seeded treatments combined with varying topsoil depths. One half of the
area will be fenced with elk proof fencing in 2001.
Shrub Plantings
The following containerized plant materials were planted in the "1999 B" strip
seeded shrub establishment area located in the north Section 16 pit area in a 1999
reclaimed parcel. See Exhibit 9 - 2000 Annual Report for the location of the
planting area.
# of Plants
Amelanchier alnifolia 2000
Artemisia tridentate 2000
Cercocarpus ledrfolius 500
Chrvsothamnus nauseosus 500
• Ribes aureum 500
Total 5,500
Augmented Seeding or Cultural Practices
No revegetated areas received additional seeding. All reclaimed areas, sediment
ponds, etc. were checked for the invasion of noxious weeds and spot sprayed as
necessary. One noxious weed species, Canadian thistle (Circium arvense) was
noted but in limited areas. A Tordon/2,4-D herbicide mix was applied on Canadian
thistle in the early summer before flowering in accordance with their labels.
In 1999 one sma11 area of East Pit reclamation (14.6 acres) was burned by a
lightening strike. The area is delineated on Exhibit 9 - 2000 Annual Report. The fire
was hot enough to burn all of the herbaceous vegetation as well as a number of
woody species (Atriplex and Artemisia). Upon review of the area in 2000 it is
apparent that while the herbaceous species rebounded quite nicely, the woody
species are unable to regenerate themselves and were lost. A couple of woody
plant establishment areas were also burned and will be monitored to determine the
effects of the fire.
•
2
