The standard is 0.002
mg/1 un-ionized H2S, while the method detects for un-ionized H2S and
ionized HS. The following table calculates the actual un-ionized H2S
concentration of the exceedences reported on Table 12. Sulfide values
were calculated from a table found on page 5 of the Internet site
http://www.cpda.co.uk/techn/clay/w2253.pdf.
Site Date H2S+HS,mg/1 ~H ~H25 H2S concentration, mg/1
~~ NPDE511 4/12/04 0.03 8.26 4.9 0.0015
YSGFS 9/1/04 0.07 8.40 3.9 0.0027 A
Y552 6/2/04 0.03 8.27 4.9 0.0015
A = exceedence
One out of three samples experienced exceedences of the sulfide
standard. It occurred at a site that, at the time, was not receiving any
water from a NPDES site. Any sulfides present in surface water should
eventually oxidize to sulfates.
NPDES Effluent Criteria (Permit No. CO-0000221). One excursion of NPDES
effluent criteria occurred this year. On March 22, NPDESII experienced
and exceedence of the total iron monthly limit (3 mg/1) with a value of
5.22 mg/1. However, since the sample was collected during snowmelt
runoff, a variance of the total iron limit was allowed.
u
15
