The property is located
11 miles east of Paonia along State Highway 133. The mine status is that of temporary cessation. The
portals were sealed during May and June of 1986.
Elk Creek, Bear Creek, and Hubbard Creek Bow across the property to the North Fork o[ the Gunnison
River (see Figure 1). Elk Creek, which drains the eastern portion of the property, has intermittent, seasonal
^ow. Bear Creek is an ephemeral stream, which drains the central portion of the mine holdings. Hubbard
Creek is a perennial stream which drains the western portion of the reserve. Peak Bows occur during
snowmelt runoff.
During 1986, Kaiser submitted a water management plan to replace the original, approved water inflow
study (Permit No. C-81-022). The objectives of this program are to gather Hubbard Creek baseline Clow and
quality data and water inflow rates into the sealed mine workings. The monitoring stations for this program
are:
II-1 Surface water station located along Hubbard Creek just below the culvert at the former tan site.
This station continues to provide stream flow and quality baseline data.
ii-(0 Groundwater well located at former substation site along Hubbard Creek. This station monitors
water in!]ow rates and water quality of the sealed mine workings.
B-6 Former power hole located along Bear Creek used as groundwater well to monitor water inflow rates
and quality in Three Dip mine area.
The following sections of this report describe the methods and results of the monitoring activities at the
Somerset Mine site.
1
