6.0 ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING AND PROTECTION
6.1 Hydrology Moni orin
6.1.1 Introduction
The monitoring plan is designed to determine impacts of WRNM's mining
operation. Based on results of initial 1991-1992 mining and monitoring, future
operations/monitoring will be evaluated. Monitoring activity in 1990-1992
exceeded the required BLM, EPA and CMLR (Colorado Mined Land Reclamation)
requirements for initial cavities. Figure 2-1 illustrates location of monitoring wells
completed in 1989-91.
6.1.2 Scooe
Hydrology monitoring concentrates on ground water monitoring as there are no
perennial streams or springs located on the sodium leases. HRS Water
Consultants were contracted to project the cone of depression based on current
plant location and projected water well pumpage rates. An evaluation of possible
springs on the lease and pumpage effected areas was conducted in 1990. No
springs were found within the cone of depression based on a review of USGS and
BLM survey results, and field inventory.
6.1.3 Stream Gauging Stations
As required by the ROD, WRNM contracted for surface water monitoring of water
quality and quantity, upstream and downstream of the cone of depression on
Yellow and Piceance Creeks. Monitoring was done by the USGS on four existing
stations with extensive historical data.

42
