In January 1992, after a prolonged plant shutdown, an attempt was made to place
• the wells on production. Following several attempts to establish circulation it was
determined that somewhere within the horizontal section of the cavity a plug had
formed, preventing comrunication between the two wells. The 7" casing was
lowered into the horizontal cavity to a measured depth of 2700 feet. At this depth
the 7" casing would go no farther. This depth corresponded to a section of the oil
shale marker bed penetrated during drilling of the original lateral section of the
well. With the 7" suspended casing positioned at 2700 feet, work proceeded to
mill out the distributor. Once the end of the distributor was milled out, another
200 feet of cavity was drilled before communication was established with the
recovery well. With communication established, solution mining began
immediately.
. Following the workover in January of 1992 to reestablish circulation, three joints
of 7" casing were added to the existing liner string. During the months following
the workover, an air leak developed between the 7" and 9 `'/g" casing strings.
The air blanket normally held on the annulus could not be maintained and was
allowed to bleed off rather than cut the threads on the joint connections.
During December 1992, after not moving the 7" suspended casing since the end
of January, an attempt vvas made to pull back the suspended liner and remove the
sections) of casing which were allowing air to pass into the production stream.
Several attempts were made to free the casing with no success. With the 7" liner
stuck, it will be necessary to plug the end of the 7" liner and cut a section out of
the casing to reestablish communication with the cavity. This will open more of
the mine cavity to circulation. Prior to the attempt to pull back the 7" suspened
casing, the bicarb stream was losing its ability to saturate indicating that the
26
