DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
David H. Getcnes, Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAYID C. SMEITON, Director
Richard D. Lamm
Governor
DATE: February 11, 1985
T0: Susan Mowry
FROM: Bob Liddle ,~~1/'
RE: Hawk's Nest Mine Annual Hydrologic Report
Per your request I have reviewed Western Slope Carbon's AHR dated
January 24, 1985. I have a few comments that should be passed on to the
operator.
1. On page 1, Section I, SAR is listed as 2.16 mg(l. W.S.C, should note
that there are no units for SAR.
2. In the AHR, "Summary of Data Collected", W.S.C. notes that some "TSS
exceedences occurred during the second quarter due to high spring
runoff. W.S.C. needs to inform MLRD why these exceedences occurred and
what measures have been taken to prevent the problem from occurring
this spring. A copy of the correspondence sent to WQCD might suffice.
3. W.S.C. should clarify whether the quarterly samples shown on Table 1
were taken the same time as field parameters were sampled.
4. Based on the report, it appears that alluvial monitoring at Crystal
Meadows could be suspended or reduced. Spring sampling could also be
suspended until the operation (coal extraction) resumes. Such
reduction would need to be requested by W:S.C. as part of a technical
revision. W.S.C. should call me if they want to pursue this.
Comment No. 2 above is our only real concern and needs to be responded to by
W.S.C. Otherwise, the AHR is acceptable.
/fw
Doc. No. 7702
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel. (303) 866-3567
III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
