Jerry Koblitz
Page 5
August 27, 1998

Monitoring frequency compliance was excellent in 1997. Surface water quantity
and quality changes are small to no existent and due to only the possibility of
limited discharge, surface water impacts are not expected. Ground water quantity
impacts are not apparent and should be minimal due to the current idle status of the
operation. No further mining at this location is currently planned and processing
activities should have a minimal impact on ground water quantity and quality.
Based on review of the 1997 Annual Hydrology Report for the New Elk Mine, the
Division has the following questions.
1. Pond 008 apparently did not discharge in 1997 yet a water sample was taken.
Did the pond actually discharge during the year?
2. Elevations of the measuring point on all wells should be included on the data
sheets or in a table in the AHR. (Rule 4.05.13(1)(d)(I)). _
If you have any questions, please call me.
Sincerely,
Kent Gorham
Environmental Protection Specialist
cc: Dan Hernandez, DMG .
