The Liberty Mine is located in Mesa County and operates under a 110
permit with a permitted acreage of 9.9 acres. This mine does not
have a phased reclamation plan.
In August, 2002, Cotter Corporation completed reclamation of the
Liberty Mine. The method of reclamation was agreeable to the BLM,
the owner of the affected parcel. The work consisted of:
• A ladder-style bat: grate portal closure - previously ,requested
by_BLM and the_Colorado Division of Wildlife.
• All poles and wire of the incoming power line were removed.
• The main shop building was..removed in 2001 by BLM, and the
concrete slab was buried with over two feet of soil. The
remaining buildings were demolished and buried at the toe of
the waste dump.
• The cutbank area south of the portal was recontoured to better
blend with the natural slope.
• The waste rock pile was regraded to a slope averaging 4.8:1
(horizontal:vertical). Areas of larger brush on the pile top
were not disturbed. The new sloped sides were covered with
topsoil and gocked for better water retention to promote
revegetation.
• The remaining flat area between the dump and county road was
scarified. The earthen materials previously stored here were
removed from the site in 2001 by Umetco.
• All reclaimed areas were seeded with a BLM-approved mixture.
Attached is a map of the site showing the final reclamation. Also
attached, for comparison, is a copy of the map submitted to BLM
last year with the reclamation plan.
The sufficiency of the financial warranty for the current status of
the above captioned permit has been reviewed by Cotter Corporation
and was found sufficient to cover the reclamation costs associated
with this property.
