• and May this year. Helianthus annuus provided the second greatest cover with 3.63 <br />percent total cover and 8.77 percent relative cover. Seven additional species contributed <br />significantly to cover, and included Agropyron dasyslachyum (thickspike wheatgrass) with <br />3.00 percent mean cover and 7.24 percent relative cover, Ca/amovilja longifolia <br />contributing 2.63 percent mean cover and 6.14 percent relative cover, Oryzopsis <br />hymenoides (Indian ricegrass) providing 2.25 percent mean cover and 7.24 percent <br />relative cover, Bromus marginatus (mountain brome) with 2.50 percent mean cover <br />(4.82% relative cover), Agropyron smithii (western wheatgrass) with 2.00 percent mean <br />and 4.82 percent relative cover, Agropyron cristatum (crested wheatgrass) providing 1.88 <br />percent mean cover (4.61% relative), and Kochia scoparia (kochia) contributing 2.00 <br />percent total cover and 4.17 percent relative cover. <br />Vegetative litter (prior yeazs growth, dead wood, and other biologic organic material) <br />comprised 29.63 percent ground cover overall within the 1995 reclamation azeas. Bare <br />soil comprised 28.88 percent of the ground cover. No rock or cryptogams were <br />encountered during the cover sampling in the 1995 reclamation areas. <br />Herbaceous Production <br />Overall total herbaceous production within the 1995 reclamation areas was the highest <br />recorded of all areas sampled in 1999, with a value of 127.05 g/m2 (1132.5 16/ac). <br />Perennial grasses contributed the most to herbaceous production, with 91.65 g/m2 (817.0 <br />• Ib/ac) which accounted for 72.1 percent of total herbaceous production. Annual grasses <br />contributed 9.43 g/m2 (84.0 16/ac) to herbaceous production in this area, which was the <br />lowest of the four lifeforms. Annual forbs provided the second largest contribution to <br />herbaceous production, accounting for 14.13 g/m2 (126.0 Ib/ac), which was 11.1 percent <br />of the total mean herbaceous production. Perennial forbs accounted for 11.84 g/m2 <br />(105.5 lb/ac) or 9.3 percent of total herbaceous production. <br />Species Composition <br />Cover sampling identified two lifeforms and 22 species within the 1995 reclamation azeas. <br />The lifeforms included twelve species of perennial grass, one annual grass, five perennial, <br />and four annual forbs. Of the species encountered on the 1995 reclamation areas, sixteen <br />were native and six were introduced. Perennial species outnumbered annual species by <br />seventeen to Sve. Both warm and cool season species contributed to the seasonality of <br />the 1995 reclamation areas. Seven graminoid species were cool season and six were warm <br />season. Seven forb species were identified as cool season and two were warm season. <br />The 1995 reclamation areas had nine species contributing greater than three percent <br />relative cover this year. These species included six perennial grasses, one annual grass, <br />and two annual forbs. These species included Bromus tectorum (41.01%), Helianthus <br />annuus (8.77%), Agropyron dasystachyum (7.24%), Oryzopsir hymenoides (7.24%), <br />Calamovilja longifolia (6.14%), Bromus margina[us (4.82%), Agropyron smithii <br />• (4.82%), Agropyron cristatum (4.61 %), and Kochia scopariu (4.17% <br />-8- <br />
