~~
2.0 SITB INVESTIGATIONS
I - 2.1 INTRODUCTION
Field investigations, conducted by Rocky Mountain Geotechnical,
r -
consisted of:
r o general site reconnaissance and verification of earlier site
' observations;
r .
o field and site reconnaissance;
o drilling, sampling and visual classification;
o test pit excavation and density testing of existing fill
areas;
o installation of piezometers for monitoring of water levels;
o sampling of borrow materials.
The field investigation was conducted in a single phase performed
. over a period of approximately 3 days. The field investigation
- was conducted on August 2 through August 5, 1984.
2.2 FIELD INVESTIGATIONS
• Eight borings were drilled with a conventional auger drilling
rig, utilizing standard split-spoon, Shelby tube, and bulk
sampling methods. The drilling rig used in the program was a
CME45, supplied by P & P Drilling. Two additional borings were
placed beyond the toe of the slope for the installation of
• piezometers. Test borings were advanced with a power-driven
• rotary drilling rig to depths ranging from 17 to 55 feet.
Samples were obtained using a 2-inch OD split-barrel sampler.
Shelby tube sampling was attempted in several borings where
significant cohesive materials were encountered or expected to
~ 6
