Bulldog Mine Tailings Ponds Eva[uanon

L_ J

For both the Upper and Lower Tailings Ponds, the azea covered by tailings is approximately 1/10
of their respective contributing watershed areas. For water infiltrating the tailings (and seeping
from the tailings as leachate) at a rate of 6 inches per yeaz (from Section 4.5) and water
infiltrating the materials in [}ie surrounding azeas of the watershed at a rate of I.5 inches per year
(from Section 4.5), the dilution of tailings leachate by surrounding watershed area infiltration can
be calculated. For a tailings area of 1/]0 of the watershed azea, the calculated dilution of tailings
leachate is over 3:1. Therefore a chemical constituent in tailings leachate, assuming no
attenuation by site subsoils, would have a concentration of less than 1/3 of the original
concentration downgradient from the impoundment.
The combination of 40 percent infiltration in the tailings with 10 percent infiltration is
surrounding soils is conservative. If the infiltration in the tailings is lower or the infiltration in
the surrounding soils is higher, the resulting dilution would be even higher.
Nomesmke ,l4ining Compmm
p: ir-ii~ie~,ume.~~,
18
Shrphcrd hiller. /nc.
.-Iprif ld. 199i
