INTRODUCTION
I
This report details the information collected in support of the Manti-LaSal
National Forest's preliminary assessment on nine inactive uranium mine groups .
The information is organized according to the four major categories of work
that were outlined in the scope of work (GJ-89-ER08) , dated July 11 , 1989.
The scope of work was prepared under the umbrella of the May 3. 1989.
iInteragency agreement (DE-AI13-89GJ30004) between the U.S. Department of
Energy (DOE) , Idaho Operations Office through its Grand Junction Projects
Office (GJPO) . and the Department of Agriculture, Manti-LaSal National Forest.
The work was performed by UNC Geotech, operating contractor at the DOE/GJPO.
The objective of the work was to assist the Manti-LaSal National Forest in
completing preliminary assessments on nine inactive uranium mine sites
suspected of violating Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and
`- Liability Act (CERCLA) standards. The work consisted of the quantification of
contaminated water discharges (flow rates and concentrations of radionuclides
and heavy metals) ; estimation of radioactive contamination in waste dumps ;
estimation of release of contamination into the air; and estimation of on-site
-li exposure to radiation, including radon, for a 18-day, 24-hour-per-day maximum
visit.
Four of the nine inactive uranium mine sites are in the Moab Ranger District
rand five sites are in the Monticello Ranger District. The mines in the Moab
 - District are the Firefly-Pigmy, Black Hat, Yellow Circle Group, and Grey Daun
Group. The mines in the Monticello District are the Rex Group, Horseshoe
No. 1. Brushy Basin No. 31 , King Edward Group, and Laura. The mines were
r l selected by the Forest Service for field sampling on the basis of preliminary
L_ work done in 1988. Site visits to each mine were -ade during August 21-25.
sl 1989.
The maps showing the locations of measurements made at each mine site are
contained in Appendix A. These maps were prepared by Bto/West, Inc. , during
field work performed in 1988 and were provided by the Forest Service to UNC
Geotech for this work. Gamma exposure-rate measurement locations and values
are noted directly on the mine site maps. Locations for radon, radon-flux,
and equivalent radium measurements are also noted on the maps; measurement
r _ values are given in the tables accompanying the maps.
L J Ore production and waste estimates from a literature search conducted under a
C subcontract by William L. Chenoweth, Grand Junction, Colorado, are given in
Appendix B.
J 1 .
