REPORT ONE - PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT, OVERVIEW <br /> NINE INACTIVE URANIUM MINES, MANPI-L1SAL NniIONAL FCRES <br /> SAN JUAN COUNTY, UTAH AND MONTROSE COUNTY, CCLORADO <br /> COMMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS <br /> One or more of the following environmental hazards are posed by each of the <br /> nine mines evaluated in this assessment. <br /> (1) Radioactive materials are being eroded from waste rock dumps. <br /> (2) Waters containing radioactive substances, sv.:h as radium 226, and <br /> containing other toxic substances, such as arsenic and selenium, are <br /> being discharged from mine workings. <br /> (3) Contaminated sediment and waters are migrating offsite and <br /> degrading surface water and perhaps ground water quality. <br /> (4) Radon gas and gamma radiation are being emitted both from mine <br /> portals and waste rock dumps. <br /> Remedial actions needed include: regrading and revegetating waste dumps <br /> for stability, eliminating mine portal water discharge by underground <br /> r, diversion and portal closure, and portal closure to eliminate radon <br /> emission from adits. <br /> Additional specific recommendations are included in the individual mine <br /> assessments. <br /> PART 1 - SITE INFORMATION AND ASSESSMENT <br /> I.
