ID# La Sal #1 ?age 2 <br /> Access (Road log) On Utah Highway 46 head 0.5 miles past the Utah-Colorado <br /> stateline to a dirt road heading north (left) up Lion Canyon. Proceed up this <br /> road for 0.2 miles to a locked cable gate (passable by motorcycle or ATV) . Go <br /> on road for 0.8 miles to the lower site. To gain access to the upper site, con- <br /> tinue on dirt road on the east side of the canyon to the top of the canyon for <br /> 0.7 miles, veering left at one intersection. The vertical shaft lies in a large <br /> cleared area directly adjacent to the road. <br /> General Site Description (topographic setting and manmade features) <br /> Elevation 6,560 ft. Slope Aspect SE-SSE <br /> The site is located near the head of Lion Canyon approximately 1 mile north of <br /> La Sal Creek. The head of the canyon contains a complex of mines including the <br /> -. Black Hat Mine, the Blue Cap Mine, and the St. Patrick's Mine. The Black Hat and <br /> Blue Cap mines are adjacent to one another. The Black Hat consists of one open <br /> production adit, one large and unstable metal building housing the adit, a mod- <br /> erately stable tipple or loadout structure, a collapsed adit, a partially grated <br /> vertical shaft, a large eroding spoil pile, and miscellaneous trash. The Blue Cap <br /> ., consists of 2 grated adits, 1 grated cavern housing a large puop which services <br /> both mines, a storage battery, miscellaneous pipe and equipment, and a large <br /> spoil pile which is unstable and eroding. Water flows from one adit at Blue Cap. <br /> The St. Patrick's Mine lies directly across the canyon from Blue Cap and consists <br /> of one grated adit, a small and stable building, potential live electrical leads <br /> and a moderate spoil pile. <br /> r - <br /> ( I <br />
