WATER QUALITY SAMPLING
• The following describes current sampling procedure. The order in which
the different wells are sampled is determined by the salinity of each well.
Wells with the lowest salinity value are sampled first to protect against
contamination' from higher salinity wells. After examining the condition ~~.
of the well, the cap is removed and static water level is measured from
the toA of the well casing and recorded. A one liter sample bailer is used
to remove five bailer volumes of water. The fifth bailer volume is used
to rinse the field sample containers, sixth bailer volume is used to fill the
field sample containers, a seventh bailer volume is used to fill the sealed
bottle provided by the lab. Field samples are then analyzed and values
recorded for temperature, pH, and electrical conductivity. At this time, a
submersible pump is then used to evacuate the well of three well volumes,
calculated by the static water level, total depth of the well, and casing
volume. The well is pumped the required time, then the fore mentioned
bailer sample procedure is repeated. Again, field analyses are completed
and recorded for temperature, pH, and electrical conductivity. Lab
samples are stored in an insulated container and transported at the
earliest possible date.
• All wells are sampled with the above sampling procedure. The following
is the sequence in which wells are sampled: FPW, DH122, DH96, AMW-1,
and SMW-2. Historically, this has been the order from least salinity to
greatest salinity wells.
Ash Monitoring Well ("AMW-2") remained dry in 1994. This well is
located on the North-East edge of old "A" Pit (Cell) in a highly disturbed
reclaimed-overburden area. Since the Well was redrilled in 1993 to the
Divisions specifications, one can only presume recharge has not occurred
in this area. In addition, faulty areas were evident in the coal seam to
the west of the well location, which could effect the recharge process.

AHR-1994 -26- STIPULATION #5
