~... • ._.
the 003 pond indicate reduced sTFeamflow, increased dissolved solids concentrations, and
reduced suspended solids concentrations in comparison to the baseline data. These
differences are attributable to the reconstruction of and different management scheme
for the 003 pond. The three sediment control ponds at the mine work very effectively.
In short, the Seneca II Mine hydrology appears to be satisfactorily under control.
~ In consideration of the data analyses, Seneca proposes only minor changes in the 1983
i
hydrology monitoring program. For ground water monitoring, Seneca proposes fo: I)
stop monitoring wells GW-SIB-P I, GW-S18-P2, and GW-S18-P3 since these nested (mvl-
tiple-completion) wells have apparently failed; 2) collect field parameters at pollution
plume wells GW-S31A2 and GW-S33 monthly rather than weekly since it is d,:vbtful that
a pollution plume will ever be detected (see Section VI); and 3) to measure water levels
only once in the winter quarter probably in late February or early March since the data
i from all wells indicate that this is a stable ground wafer level period. Also, the winter
snowpack at the mine makes monthly water level monitoring difficult and potentially
hazardous during the winter quarter. In all other respects, the 1983 ground water moni-
toring program will be similar to the 1982 monitoring program (i.e. monthly water levels
`~~ andbi-annual sampling).
For surface water monitoring, Seneca proposes to monitor surface water sites SW-52-I,
SW-S2-4, SW-S2-5, and SW-52-6 only once between November 1983 and late February or
early March 1984 for flow and quality since these sites are typically frozen in this period
while access is difficult and potentially hazardous. These four sites will be monitored
monthly for flow and quality between March and early November. Site SW-52-2 will
continue to be monitored monthly and NPDES Points 002, 003, and 004 weekly for flow
and quality.
Another small detail Seneca will attend to in 1983 is surveying the exact locution of
` monitor wells GW-S31A2 and GW-545P1.
Seneca Coals personnel will contact the CMLR staff soon regarding the proposed changes
~ in the surface and ground water monitoring programs.
-68-
