This can pose a dilemma when assessing laboratory quality assurance of solutions with low salinities. In the table, historical average values for potassium and chloride were converted to meq/1 to show effect of these parameters on mass balance calculations at multiple ground and surface water sites at the Pittsburg and Midway, Edna Mine. The use of mass balance calculations to ascertain laboratory quality assurance should include values for potassium and chloride when TDS levels are less than 550 mg/1. Values for potassium and chloride may be obtained from laboratory analyses or historic average values at the site. If a mass balance calculation is performed without this data, it would be prudent to raise the accepted quality assurance standard from 5%. vj r 5276E
