Summer Water Report <br />Year 2000 <br />Apex #2 Mine <br />Permit C-81-011 <br />Surface Water <br />In contrast to last summer's high precipitation, this summer has been extremely low, as <br />has been much of the western United States. The grass began turning brown during the <br />later part of June. The single sediment pond for the entire disturbed area did not <br />discharge; it only contained runoff water which was later evaporated. All disturbed <br />area is channeled into the sediment pond except for a small exemption area of less <br />than 0.1 acre located at the reclaimed office area. The sediment pond discharge is <br />permitted with the Colorado Department of Health as NPDES Permit #COG-850041. <br />(The permit was formerly CO-0036668). Quarterly DMR forms and quarterly sediment <br />pond inspections have been previously submitted and revealed no problems with <br />functionality of the pond. <br />Trout Creek, the perennial stream located adjacent to the reclaimed yard area, was <br />tested quarterly for pH, Specific conductance, temperature and flow. The sample <br />location was moved to immediately downstream of the reclaimed area. The data for the <br />summer quarter 2000 showed lower than average flows in Trout Creek (for summer <br />measurement). The water is of good quality and compares favorably to the baseline <br />analysis included in the permit. Iron, zinc and arsenic are in low concentration. Total <br />dissolved solids are only 150 mg/L,, which is an increase of 40 mg/1 over last year, but <br />this is mostly due to the lower flow. <br />All portal seals are intact and do not show any signs of seepage or other problems. The <br />mine or its reclamation has not had any adverse effect on the prevailing hydrologic <br />balance. The diversion ditch above the minesite along the residential access road has <br />required cleaning as did the culvert crossing of this diversion under the Trout Creek <br />Road. <br />Ground Water <br />In 1997 a revision was submitted to install two new shallow groundwater monitoring <br />wells upstream and downstream of the mine reclaimed area. These wells were installed <br />in 1997 and replaced the old upstream and downstream wells. This was done since the <br />downstream well and surface water monitoring points were near the P&M Edna mine <br />
