Lysimeters have been checked quarterly throughout the year and have remained dry.
Sampling of the San Luis town wells and The Shalom Ranch well and headgate occurred
monthly and results have been forwarded to the applicable parties.
The underdrain at the base of the tailings embankment was monitored monthly for rate of
seepage. The underdrain continually flowed at an average of 30 gpm.
Staff gauges were read daily from April -June and weekly during the other months. RS-4 and
RS-6 continue to be dry. The staff gauges received routine maintenance durino the year
The tailings embankment piezometers have been checked and monitored montnly.
The collection pond leak detection system was sampled and pumped monthly for eight
months. The system was frozen in the months of December, January, February and March.
The return flow in the system averaged 35 GPAD for 1999.
As specified in the approved TR-010, weekly and monthly pond compliance retorts have
been submitted to the CDMG.
As the result of summer rainfall a total of 11,487,200 gallons of water was transported from the
evaporation pond to the tailings impoundment. This was necessary to control the evaporation
pond level.
TECHNICAL REVISIONS
TR-26 was submitted to the CDMG on March 22, 1999. Battle Mountain has been actively
managing the seepage from the West Pit, and the water management plan developed in TR-26
has been implemented generally according to schedule. The water management techniques
employed since the submission of TR-26 to the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
(DMG) have begun the process of modifying the hydrology in the vicinity of the West Pit as was
described in TR-26. As a consequence, groundwater levels, seepage flows (along the Rito
Seco), and surface water quality have changed.
With the approval of the DMG Battle Mountain Resources implemented the following steps:
1. On July 4, 1999 wells M-18, M-19, and M-20 were brought on line. Wells M-28 and M-29
were brought on line in September.
2. On July 15, 1999 the Enhanced evaporation system was placed into operation with feed
water being supplied by wells BF-3, BF-4 and BF-5.
3. On August 25, 1999 the seep collection system was diverted from the infiltration gallery
to the evaporation pond.
