' San Luis Mine Phase 0, Raise 2 Design Report
' 1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 General
Battle Mountain Resources, Inc. (BMRI) has initiated work on the second embankment raise of the
tailings disposal area for the San Luis Project. The conceptual design and stability analyses for the
tailings facility were presented th the San Luis 112 operating permit amendment. As discussed in
Section D.6 of the permit amendment, prior to construction of the raise, geotechnical testing of the
' insitu tailings material will be performed to verify the conceptual design. Steffen Robertson and
Kirsten (U.S.), Inc. (SRK) designed the tailings facility, and was retained to confirm the
' embankment raise design and the suitability of the insitu tailings. This report presents the results
of the tailings investigations and the stability analyses used to confirm the raise design and refers
to information presented in the original permit (Permit No. M-88-112, "Permit") and the 1989
' permit amendment (Amendment) together referred to as the "Approved Permit".
' 1.2 Background
The embankment raise discussed herein corresponds to the second of two raises required for Phase
' II operations as presented in the Amendment. The existing embankment consists of the initial Phase
I embankment and the first embankment raise {Phase II Raise 1). The Phase I embankment consists
of a zoned earthfill structure with a crest to toe height of approximately 120 ft, 3H:1 V downgradient
' . slopes and 2.SH:1V upgradient slopes. Raise 1 of the Phase II operations consists of an upstream
raise which increased the embankment height by IS ft that was completed in December, 1993.
' Raise 1 was constructed to a crest elevation of 8605 ft with 3H:1V and 2.SH:1V downgradient and
upgradient slopes respectively. The downgradient slope of the raise is founded on the Phase I
embankment while the upgradient slope is founded on previously deposited tailings.
As presented in the Amendment, the second and fmal raise would be constructed by upstream
t methods when the tailings elevation reached 8600 ft. The raise was designed to be constructed to
a crest elevation of 8620 ft with 3H:1V and 2.SH:1V downgradient and upgradient slopes
' respectively. The downgradient slope of the raise was designed to be founded on the crest of the
first Phase II raise while the upgradient slope would be founded on previously deposited tailings.
' As of late June 1995 the tailings are at an elevation of 8598 to 8600 ft adjacent to the existing
embankment. Accordingly, BMRI has ceased tailings deposition in this area until the embankment
t raise can be constructed.
1
y t_~ ro~ect o.
1
