MARCH SURVEY
The March survey flight was conducted on Mazch 17, 1991 using a Cessna 182. The weather
conditions at the time of the flight consisted of temperatures ranging from 28-35°F, winds were 0-5 mph
from the east, and skies were partly cloudy. Small areas on south and west facing slopes at the lower
elevations were free of snow while upper elevations were snow covered. The Steamboat Springs azea
had recently received snow and was snowing off and on at the time of take off. Skies were cleazing and
the scheduled flight was delayed until visibility improved. The survey was initiated at 0900 hours and
terminated at 1130 hours. A survey of Seneca II Mine was from 1100 to 1130 hours. The Yoast azea
was flown from 1030 to 1100 hours. The Seneca II -West azea was flown from 0900 to 1030 hours.
Most of the deer and elk were feeding or moving during the first hour and 30 minutes of the
flight. However by the last hour of the flight many of the animals were bedded down in the mountain
brush habitat.
Seneca II -Several groups of elk were observed within the Seneca II survey area (Table 2).
Thirty elk were observed in section 3 in mountain brush habitat. Several observations of fewer animals
were noted. No deer observations were made. Three eagles were observed. One was observed nesting
at the nest site in section 27. The other two were soaring above the survey area in separate locations.
Yoast -One small group of elk was observed within the survey area. No deer and one eagle was
observed.
Seneca II -West -Several groups of elk and deer were observed within the survey azea. Many of
the deer were observed along the north-south ridge west of the paved road in sections 9 and 4. Several
lazge groups of elk were observed north of the mine.
r
L_
4
