1
The pumping of the Corley Well and North Entry Well are accounted for in
the eater analysis of the mine and preparation plant. Because of the
complexity of the old mine workings in the area. and the potential
connection to the stream system. it is anticipated that historic and
current mining and pumping operations in the area have already affected
the ground water discharge to the stream system. Figure 9 illustrates the
relationship of the wells and coal seams to the ground surface and the
surface water system.
Coal Preparation Plant
The coal preparation plant uses water for coal washing and separation. but
e large portion of this water is recycled continuously during plant
operation. The amended records for 1985 were analyzed to determine the
amount of water used by the coal preparation plant. As ehovn in Table 3.
the total amount of water eateriag the preparation plant system on raw
coal annually. approximately 47.7 acre-feet. is supplemented with 7.3
acre-feet annually. The total amount of water leaving the preparation
plant system with the clean coal. refuse. and other water uses for outside
washing and Black Water Pond evaporation. is equal to the total amount of
water entering the system. of 55.0 acre-feet annually. Koieture contents
of the various products entering and leaving the preparation plant were
obtained from sample analyses provided by mine personnel. Appendiz C
discusses the methodology used for the numbers calculated above.
The water brought into the preparation plant on raw coal equals 15 percent
of raw coal by vet weight. This water consists of specific retention, or
water which will not drain by the force of gravity alone (see Appendiz B
for a detailed explanation of epecifie retention). and water remaining on
the rar coal from inside-mine duet suppression requirements. The removal
of the portion of water retained on the raw coal which ie specific
retention does not impact downstream water rights. but that portion of
incoming water which ie remaining from underground duet suppression
requirements is consumptive use and is described in the section below on
- 17 -
