1
WILDLIFE RESOURCES ASSESSMENT
CEMEX "C" PIT AND CKD DISPOSAL SITE
1.0 PURPOSE OF THE REPORT
_ _ . -
1.1 Introduction
' This report describes the wildlife habitat types and potential wildlife species present at
the Cemex "C" Pit site, identifies federal and state wildlife species of concern in the
habitat types present, and discusses potential impacts to wildlife from the presence of
approximately 100 acre feet of water in "C" Pit. Wildlife mitigation issues are discussed
in Section 6.0, including mitigation options.
' 1.2 Regulatory Jurisdiction
Cemex operates "C" Pit under a 112 permit with the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
Board (Permit No. M-77-208). No federal permits or funding are required to operate the
' pit. Therefore, wildlife resources regulatory jurisdiction for "C" Pit is under the authority
of the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology, with the Colorado Division of
Wildlife (CDOW) providing technical assistance. Afield consultation was held on
' August 6, 2004 with Windi Lassiter, the current District Wildlife Manager for the cement
plant area, and Sharlene Haeger with the Lon Hagler State Wildlife Area office in
Loveland.
2.0 REPORT METHODOLOGY AND FORMAT
Determination of wildlife habitats and wildlife species of concern was accomplished as
follows:
1. Previous vegetation and wildlife studies completed at the site were reviewed to
ascertain the level of effort completed within the analysis area, and identify additional
issues to be addressed.
2. Field reconnaissance was conducted to determine the wildlife habitats present within
the Project site, and analyze the relationship of "C" Pit to these habitats.
3. Discussions were held with the staff of the Colorado Division of Minerals and
Geology (DMG), and the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW).
4. A potential wildlife species list (vertebrates only) for the property was compiled
beginning with the Natural Diversity Information Source database for Boulder
County for amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles (NDIS 2004). This county list
was then edited by the report preparer for the habitats present on the Property, and
checked with appropriate literature review (Andrews and Righter 1992, Kingery
1998, Fitzgerald et al. 1994, and Hammerson 1999).
