200A Revegetation Survey
Introduction
During September and October visual surveys the referenced sites were made. Each site
was walked or driven with an ATV to assess the entire site. Observations were then
recorded on an inspection form for future reference (see Appendix). The intent of the
inspections were to:
1. Assess the effectiveness of past revegetation practices.
2. Identify potential problems that exist that may warrant further attention.
3. Provide insight to future revegetation efforts.
4. Provide information needed to develop strategies to correct potential
deficiencies.
East Portal Area
Dry prevailing conditions have limited the maturation of the perennial species. Good
grass and shrub growth was noted however many seedlings may be dormant due to the
drought. Good shrub and grass establishment was noted primarily in the core area.
Excellent establishment was noted within the riprap channels.
Drill Sites
In general, the reclaimed sites were in good condition. The condition generally reflected
the maturity of the site as well as the quality of the soils at the location. Many shrubs and
forbs were prominent on many of the sites. Best forb and shrub establishment occurred
on harsh sites that had little competition from weeds. However, these harsher sites also
produced fewer grasses and less ground cover. Where weed competition was greatest
perennial grass seedlings usually persisted in adequate densities.
Refuse Area #1
This site continues to be dominated by grasses. Cheatgrass continues to be a problem but
perennial grasses appear to be maintaining their hold. The lack of forbs and shrubs may
become an issue or may slow the maturation of this site towards Phase III bond release.
