• Introduction
An intensive cultural resources inventory was conducted on
September 16 and 20, 1980 of an area of about 160 acres located in
the St. Vrain Valley between Lyons and Longmont, Boulder County,
Colorado and northeast of Foothills Reservoir. More specifically,
the area surveyed was most of the SFJ! and most of the W~ of the NE4
of Section 27, T3N, R70W (cf. Figure 1). The survey was conducted by
Joseph J. Lischka, Associate Professor in the Dept. of Anthropology
at the University of Colorado at Boulder, at the request of western
Paving Construction Co., who intend to quarry gravel in the area.
The limits of the survey area were clearly demarcated by roads,
fence lines and a railroad bed. The entire survey area lies in the
floodplain of St. Vrain Creek, the highest point in the survey area
• being approximately 20 feet above the present creek bed. The entire
area surveyed was in pasture. At the time of the survey, vegetative
growth was heavy and ground visibility in most areas was essentially
zero. The only areas where the ground was easily visible were on old
gravel bars that are found throughout the survey area. Old meander
patterns can be seen in air photos in all parts of the survey area.
An area of about 40 acres in the extreme southern part of the survey i
area has been graded to improve the pasture, which has completely
obliterated all surface features. A fenced pasture area of about 10
acres near the center of the survey area contained a small herd of
bison. On the advice of the landowner, the archeological surveyor

•
