Mr. David Berry <br />October 26, 1988 <br />Page 6 <br />4) The detection limit used for mercury is consistently above the material <br />damage standard. The detection limit should be lowered to allow <br />comparison with the .0005 mg./1. (total recoverable) standard. Please <br />discuss this problem, and if a lower detection limit is not possible <br />due to some laboratory analysis constraint, an explanation must be <br />provided. <br />CYVCC RESPONSE: <br />1) USGS surface water sites (700 and 900) are an integral part of the AHR <br />and are incorporated into the data base upon receival of the data from <br />the USGS. <br />2) Figure 3, Spoil Spring Location has been revised to show the location <br />of springs M3-87-1 and M3-87-2. <br />3) The procedure in the MLRD's question is typically followed by CYCC. <br />However, there are a couple of exceptions to this based upon CYCC's <br />specific monitoring requirements. The exceptions are associated with <br />the USGS station and the bedrock wells monitored currently. In <br />reference to the USGS stations, flow is obtained from the USGS at a <br />later date, and then incorporated into CYCC's data base. <br />In reference to the bedrock wells, which are typically low yielding <br />wells, they are pumped and then left to recover. A sample is obtained <br />the next day or as soon as ground conditions allow. <br />4) This question has arisen repeatedly since 1985 and the response has <br />been reviewed and accepted by the Division. The reason the detection <br />limit is above the standard is because the current laboratory procedure <br />can not "see" mercury at this level. The standard has outpaced the <br />accepted technology. <br />MLRD CONCERN: <br />Bedrock Wells <br />Two wells are monitored at mine No. 3. Both wells have exhibited electrical <br />conductivity, total dissolved solids and sulphate levels above receiving <br />stream standards. The most recent iron values for well 008-77-58 are lower <br />than previous measurements, which had been higher than receiving stream <br />standards. The 1987 manganese concentration in well 008-79-6 approaches the <br />receiving stream standard of 0.174 mg./1 (dissolved). <br />The AHR concludes that the baseline total dissolved solids level for these <br />wells is about 1,000 mg./1. It is our understanding, however, that mining <br />predates the data base for these wells. Please provide a brief explanation <br />to substantiate the baseline estimate. <br />
