RSP-5 <br />This spring is located mid-way up <br />slope reclaimed in 1986 east of ditch ~1. <br />vicinity of the final backfill of the <br />highwall. <br />the north-facing reclaimed <br />This area is located in the <br />pit adjacent to the reduced <br />The water source is apparently a shallow perched zone within the <br />unmined hillside which surfaces at the interface of the highwall and <br />backfill material. The water undoubtedly contributed to the <br />settlement of the backfill material. This expected settlement has <br />been a common occurrence at H-G and may have been further influenced <br />by the perched water, <br />At the time it was determined that a spring existed at this <br />location, rather than the consolidation of water from slumped contour <br />ditches, the flow had stopped and a sample could not be taken. If <br />this seep reappears during future monitoring, it will be sampled. <br />RSP-6 <br />Also, in June it was noticed that a wet area still remained south <br />of RSP-1 about 300 feet and west of Ditch Al about 200 feet. Earlier <br />in May much of this area was still wet from spring snowmelt and a seep <br />was not noticeable. In June the adjacent areas had dried sufficient <br />to allow this site to appear more noticeable. <br />. Since this area was nothing more than a moist area, a sample <br />could not be taken, but, if possible, the appropriate sampling will be <br />conducted in the future. <br />• <br />-7- <br />
