Draft West Elk Mine 2005 Annual Hydrology Report 1
• 1.0 INTRODUCTION
This Mountain Coal Company, LLC (MCC) West Elk Mine (Project) 2005 Annual Hydrology
Report (AHR) details the hydrologic monitoring acfivities and summarizes pertinent data with
respect to mining operations as required by MCC's Permit C-80-007 with the Colorado Division o
Minerals and Geology (CDMG) for the Water Year 2005 (WY 2005), October 1, 2004 through
September 30, 2005.
1.1 Overview of Mining Operations
ht WY 2005, mining was completed in longwall panel 23 and mining was advanced up to crosscut
8 in longwall panel 24 at the Project. Development mining continued in longwall panels 18, 19,
and 20 and B East Mains (see Map 1).
2.0 HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY OF 2005 WATER YEAR
During the Water Year 2005, October 2004 through September 2005 (WY 2005), precipitation and
snowfall were above average, resulting in higher than average stream flows in Western Colorado.
• 2.1 Climatological Data
Precipitation and snow data for the Project area for WY 2005 were derived from the Paonia 1 SW
(56306), Overland Reservoir (59853), and McClure Pass (59743) meteorological and Snotel
stations. Figures 1, 2, and 3 show WY 2005 monthly average precipitation data compared to 30-
year historical averages for Paonia, Overland Reservoir, and McClure Pass (Colorado Climate
Center, 2005). The total annual precipitation was 116%, 114%, and 111% of the 30-year historical
averages for Paonia, Overland Reservoir, and McClure Pass, respectively.
•
September 2006 HydroGeo, Inc.
