• CARBON JUNCTION MINE (C-92-080)
ANNUAL HYDROLOGIC REPORT
WATER YEAR 1997

The Oakridge Energy, Inc. Carbon Junction Mine (CDMG Permit No. C-92-080) is
located approximately 2 ~fz miles southeast of Durango, Colorado. The mine is located
on an area known as Ewing Mesa near the juncture of Highways 160 and 550. The
mine site is located in the upper drainage basin of Carbon Junction Canyon. The upper
drainage basin of Carbon Junction Canyon is an intermittent tributary of the Animas
River. Much of the Carbon Junction Canyon drainage has a steep grade with a total
drainage basin of 0.8 square miles.
Hydrologic sampling and data collection has been conducted at the Carbon Junction
Mine since 1982. The hydrologic sampling program is in place in order to protect
water quality during the life of the mining permit. The mine site was originally
permitted by the Division of Minerals and Geology (CDMG), formerly Mined Land
Reclamation Division, in 1983 and recently re-permitted in 1993. To date coal mining
activity has been initiated on the site on a minor scale. The extent of coal mining at the
Carbon Junction Mine includes opening the north and south pits. Ancillary activity has
included construction of a permanently reclaimed spoils area, sediment control
• structures, topsoil stockpiles, and pads for equipment. No reclamation has occurred at
the mine site.
This report includes hydrologic data for the 1997 water year. Figures in this report
show trends from water year 1995 to water year 1997. With this data trends in ground
water and surface water may be analyzed. Charts were not made for chemical
constituents that were analyzed consistently below the normal detection level.
Hydrologic data were collected for the Carbon Junction Mine from 1982 to the present
except for the second, third, and fourth quarters of 1988. This data and along-term
analysis of ground water and surface water at the Carbon Junction Mine were presented
in the 1995 hydrologic report. Additional information is presented in this report.
Locations of monitored springs and wells are found on the well and spring map within
the permit document.
In addition to the hydrologic monitoring undertaken for springs and groundwater wells
at the mine, monitoring of discharges from the sediment pond is undertaken. Sediment
ponds are also inspected on a quarterly basis for compliance with CDMG regulations.
Information on discharges and sediment pond inspections follows the hydrologic
monitoring program information.

-1-
