SUMMARY
Except for the elevated conductivity and iron of mine dewatering at site I I5, there have been no significant
unexpected hydrology impacts attributable to the activities or developments at the Foidel Creek Mine during the
1999 Water Year. The previously noted declining water level trend in Wadge Overburden well 91 M006 appears
to have continued during 1999 after stabilizing levels were noted during 1995. This trend may be related to
localized dewatering of [he fonna[ion as a result of mining activities in the vicinity. A marked decline in water
level, which corresponds with longwall mining in the East Mining District was noted to occur in wells 93M001
and 93M003. No significant water quality degradation is noted for the Wadge Overburden formation as a result
of evaluating data collected during 1999.
Water levels in the monitored T+ventytnile Sandstone wells remained comparable to previously collected data and
stable. No significant +vater quality influences are noted to be evident in feld data obtained during 1999.
Localized dewatering of the Trout Creek Sandstone appears evident in [he vicinity of well 001-83-106 although
levels remain stable. The declining water level trend to be apparent at well 001-83-107 seems to be leveling off.
All of these declines may be attributable to the pumping of well 001-83-106. Well monitoring efforts at 95M001
during 1999 yielded water levels comparable to those previously documented at +vell FCM#2. Water quality
characteristics recorded at [his site are also comparable to those previously defined for well FCM#2. The water
levels returned by this site and by well FCM#2 during 1999 are noted [o be markedly lower [Iran levels previously
• returned from well 006-83-43C. No inflows from the Trout Creek formation into the mine workings have been
encountered to explain this difference in potentiometric surface or to suggest that dewatering of the formation is
directly attributable to mining activities. No readily apparent water quality impacts associated with mining are
noted for rite Trout Creek Sandstone aquifer based upon data collected during 1999.
Mining related dewatering impacts are noted for the Fish Creek sandstone +vells 91M001 attd 91M004. Botlt
sites were undermined in 1995 and exhibited water level declines corresponding to mining activity. Both wells
appear to be stabilizing however 91M004 still experiences seasonal water level fluctuations. Two springs are
monitored in the same vicinity. SWI did not flow during This period, but SW2 was recorded as Flowing in
November, May, attd August. TCC will continue to monitor these locations in 1999.
No unusual observations are noted with respect [o Foidel Creek alluvium groundwater levels. Though remaining
elevated. Well 001-5-? condttc[ivi[y values appear to be stabilizing. Elevated TDS concentrations previously
documented at Foidel Creek alluvium at well 008-AV-? have declined slightly. TCC will continue to carefully
monitor the direction of this trend.
No unusual observations are noted with respect to Fislt Creek alluvium groundwater levels. The +vater level
decline noted in well 006-AY-1 since 199, appears to be leveling off. 1999 water levels were very similar to the
1998 levels. Overall, Fluctuations at this well are insignificant. No other notable water level observations are
• apparent based upon review of the 1999 data. The gradual increase in the field conductiviq~ trend continued in
14
