•' I . WATER USE ANALYSIS <br /> Water use at the Keenesburg Mine during 1990 was the same as in 1989 . <br /> - Office and shop potable water and wash water <br /> - Evaporation <br /> A. As in 1989, there was no irrigation. Of the 30.4 acres seeded in <br /> 1989, only one small strip along the 1985 reclamation area is <br /> showi„g signs of recovery. Since there is no erosion on the other <br /> five areas, Coors prefers to let these areas stand without reseeding <br /> in order to determine if they will reseed themselves. <br /> Rainfalls at the Mine during the growing months were as follows: <br /> April: 0.40 inches <br /> May: 2.31 inches <br /> June: 0.00 inches <br /> July: 2.89 inches <br /> August: 0.89 inches <br /> Sept. : 1.67 inches <br /> Vegetation monitoring in August indicated less growth on all areas. <br /> Local ranchers had a shortage of grass. This may have been due to <br /> the dry month of June and may explain the poor recovery on the 1989 <br /> reclamation areas. <br /> B. Dust Suppression. <br /> Dust suppression was limited to the ash dump and the access road to <br /> this dump. Standard procedure was to cover ash dust areas with <br /> overburden rather than using water. This is required by the <br /> Certificate of Designation. <br /> C. Office, Shop and Washdown Needs. <br /> Potable and wash water was supplied from deep well p24650-F (LFH <br /> #1) . Approximately 0.50 acre feet of water was used to supply <br /> shower and sanitary facilities. According to the well meter, the <br /> total water used was 1.95 acre feet. <br /> D. Evaporation. <br /> The consumptive use of surface runoff, subsurface water seeps, and <br /> pit water by evaporation involved B Pit sump and Evaporation Pond U. <br /> Precipitation data for 1990 is presented in Figure 1. Gross <br /> evaporation at the mine site is 45.5 inches, (from Figure 2) . The <br /> net evaporation for 1990 is: <br /> 45.5 minus .7 x 13.9" = 35.8" evaporation per year. The annual <br /> consumptive use by evaporation is: The total free water surface <br /> area/month x feet of evaporation/month, x monthly % of total <br /> evaporation. Adding evaporation amounts for each month a given <br /> structure existed equals a total of 9.81 acre feet of water <br /> evaporated in 1990. (See Table 1) <br /> Page 2 <br />
