1
' The Twentymile Coal Company Foidel Creek Mine is located approximately
25 miles southwest of Steamboat Springs, Colorado on the south end of
Twentymile Park (Figure 1). The surface facilities cover approximately 190
' acres. Approximately 29 acres of the Wadge Coal seam have been mined using
continuous miners.Of thi s area approximately 7.0 acres have been pillared.
' A spur of Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad runs to the site.
Immediately north of the portal area is Foidel Creek into which the mine
' water is discharged. The site drainage is into two sediment ponds (Pond D
and Pond G) which drain northward into Foidel Creek. Further north of the
' portal area is Fish Creek. Future mining is planned to extend into the Fish
Creek drainage. The portal area is bordered by spoils from the Colorado
' Yampa Coal Company (CYCC) strip mines. The portal is faced-up in the down
dip low-wall of the strip mine.
Hydrologic monitoring has been conducted in the areas since 1979. The
underground mine was begun in 1983; however, surface coal mining has been
conducted in the immediate vicinity since the 1960's. This report covers
the hydrologic monitoring for water year 1987. The previous monitoring of
this areas was presented in the 1986 Annual Hydrologic Report. The
hydrologic monitoring has been divided into five parts: 1) ground water,
2) surface water, 3) springs, 4) mine inflows, and 5) effluent sites.
The monitoring locations are shown on Figure 2 and summarized on Table 1.
The parameter lists are shown on Table 2 and 3. A complete listing of all
' water data collected at these sites is submitted separately. Summaries of
the complete data set and the 1987 water year data are presented on Tables 4
' to 38 and Figures 3 to 25.
The majority of the monitoring work was conducted by a consultant, Ai Miller
of Steamboat Springs, Colorado during the 1986-1987 water year. Presently
' the monitoring is conducted by Cyprus Yampa Valley Coal Corporation
personnel. All of the water quality analyses were performed by ACZ
Laboratories (formerly Bookcliffs) of Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

1
