Total average vegetation cover, for first hits, was 33.3%. Total average vegetation cover, for all
hits, was 35.3%. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock each had 3.6%, 15.9%, 38.1%, and
9.1 % cover, respectively (first hits). Average species density was 18.5 species/100 sq. m.
Production
(Table 19)
Total average production was 506.8 Ibs/acre. Native cool season grasses contributed the most
with an average production of 356.9 Ibs/acre (making up approximately 70% of the total
production).
WESTERN WHEAT EXTENDED REFERENCE AREA
(Photographs 41-44)
Cover
(Table 20)
Native perennial cool season grasses were most abundant, making up 15.4% of the total 34.1%
vegetation cover (all hits). Within this group, western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithi~) was
most common, having 8.8°fo total coves. Native perennial (orbs were the second most common
life form (12.9% cover), comprised by numerous species with low percent cover values and
lacking dominant species. Weedy milkvetch (Astragalus miser var. oblongifolius), had the highest
percent cover value of the native perennial (orbs (5.6%).
Total average vegetation cover, for first hits, was 33.1 %. Total average vegetation cover, for all
hits, was 34.1%. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock each had 3.2%, 32.9°10, 30.8%, and
0.1 % cover, respectively (first hits). Average species density was 20.0 species/100 sq.m.
Production
(Table 21)
Total average production was 715.5 Ibs/acre. Native perennial cool season grasses and native
perennial fortis contributed the most with an average production of 397.9 and 289.1 Ibs/acre
respectively (together making up approximately 96% of the total production).
Shrub Concentration Area Sampling
Several areas designated as shrub concentration areas were sampled in 2006. Results of the
sampling are compiled in Tables 27 through 39 of Appendix 3.
14
