3.0 STATUS OF CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM (1999 - 2000)
3.1 Extent of Current Disturbances
The Yankee Gulch Project officially broke ground at the Piceance Site on January 9,
2000. Under construction at the present time are the Piceance Site Processing Facility.
solution mining well pads, well field piping to connect the wells with the processing
facility, well field roads that will provide access to the various well pads and piping in
the well field, and American Soda's Main Access Road, which provides paved road
access to the Piceance Site Processing Facility.
3.2 Piceance Site Processing Facility
The Piceance Site Processing Facility is where the major solution mining equipment will
be located during commercial operations. Construction on the facility began on January
9, 2000 and is scheduled for completion in October 2000. The facility will house the
boilers and pumps that will be used to heat and pump the water used to solution mine
the nahcolite mineral resource. The facility will include a substation located to the
southwest as illustrated in Figure 2. The total area of disturbance for this facility is
approximately 6.5 acres.
A 6-foot-deep, 1-acre evaporation pond is located just northwest of the Piceance Site
Processing Facility as shown in Figure 2. The pond will contain stormwater drainage
from the processing plant area. The pond is lined with high density polyethylene
' (HDPE) and bermed on all sides, with a spillway near its southwest corner. The total
area of disturbance for this pond is approximately 2 acres.
In addition, a 11.5-acre temporary lay down and parking area was constructed in
January 2000 as described above (Figure 2). This area is scheduled for reclamation
during the 2000 - 2001 report period.
3.3 Solution Mining Wells and Pads -
During the report period, American Soda constructed 34 well pads in the summer of
2000. The size of these pads is approximately 150 feet by 80 feet. However, out of the 34
pads, only 26 wells will be drilled during the summer and fall of 2000. Drilling of these
wells is expected to commence the week of July 17, 2000. Total disturbance associated
with construction of the 34 well pads is approximately 9.4 acres.
3.4 Well Field Piping
There are three types of well field piping currently being installed For the Yankee Gulch
Project. They include the 12-inch diameter main header pipe rack, v,~hich exmnds from
the Piceance Site Processing Facility down the length of the 0 - 5 year raining panel;
American Soda.
