III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Findin¢s•
AA-1 - In reviewing laboratory results, (1996 data compared to 1995 data) AA-1
saw a 43.8% reduction in conductivity, a 44.6% reduction in total
dissolved solids, 17.2% increase in manganese and a reduction of 86.0% in
total iron.
In evaluating the effects of the mining operation, based on conductivity,
total dissolved solids, and total iron and manganese, the Bear No. 3 Mine
had no significant deleterious effects on groundwater during 1996
compared with data generated from 1987 through 1996.
AA-3 In reviewing laboratory results, (1996 data compared to 1995 data) the
conductivity and total dissolved solids in well AA-3 increased 104% and
145% respectively. The concentration of manganese and total iron both
decreased 100.0% to an undetectable level. This increase in conductivity
and total dissolved solids is probably the result of water infiltrating into well
AA-3 from a broken mine discharge line located upstream from AA-3
several months earlier. As can be seen on map "Figure 11 ", monitoring well
AA-3 is located close to ditch "A", a perimeter ditch surrounding the mine.
It is believed that discharge water flowing in this ditch, and over monitoring
well AA-3, infiltrated into this well thus temporarily contaminating it. Since
Bear Coal Company is not currently discharging any mine water, firture
water results should show a steady decrease in conductivity and total
dissolved solids.
-3- 4/98
