Geology
The geology of the mine permit area is dominated by the Mt. Garfield, Hunter
• Canyon and Wasatch Formations of the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary Ages. The river
bottom and floodplain contain sand and gravel deposits of Quaternary age. The coal
seams being mined in the area are contained within the Mt. Garfield formation. The Cameo
seam in its Upper and Lower benches (C8 B Seams) are the seams being mined now.
Other seams in the area are the Palisade and the Carbonera. Both are of limited economic
interest since they tend to be thin, lenticular and poor quality. Additional information
regarding the geology of the mine permit area can be found in Volume 2, Tab 6 of the
permit application package.
Mine Production and Design.
During 1997 and 1998 only the Roadside North Portal produced coal. No second
mining occurred in 1998; therefore, no subsidence from this year's mining was expected.
Mining during 1997 was mostly development work. Second mining occurred only while
retreating from the 4TH West panel. The area mined is shown on Figure 1, 1998
Subsidence Surveys. The overburden in the areas mined at Roadside North has ranged
• from a high of about 1,800 feet to a low of about 300 feet in the current mining area. The
mining extraction ratios have varied from a low of 43 % where a 60' by 120' entry spacing
was used to a high of 68 °r6 where second mining was done. During 1998 mining has been
conducted in the 2nd and 3rd West panels, as well as, beginning development of the C
Seam in the First North Mains.
The Roadside South Portal was not mined during 1997 or 1998. During 1996 the
6th and 7th east Panels were mined. Ovefiurden ranged from 600 feet to 1500 feet in
these panels. The extraction ratio in these panels was approximately 42°~.
Projected Mining For 1999
Mining will occur only in the Roadside North Portals during 1999. The first North
Mains will be extended and the North West Mains will be started. This development in the
C Seam is projected to follow the north flank of Jeny Creek. Since the mains have been
designed to be long term entries, the corridor of reduced extraction under Jeny Creek will
afford an protection against any detrimental effects of subsidence in the creek bed. Panels
• will be driven to the northeast and/or the southwest after the mains have been developed.
1998 Subsidence ~" Page 2 12-31-98
