1987 RECLAMiATION AREA
The 1987 Reclamation Area encompasses approximately 44 acres of reclaimed pit in
the south central azea of the Keenesburg Mine permit azea. The 1987 Reclamation
Area is composed of two parcels (west and east) separated by a north-south haul road
comdor. This area is nearly flat with a gentle slope (< 1 °) to the south and east.
Reclamation and coincident revegetation within this azea took place in 1987. Replaced
soils were generally sandy in texture. Specific sampling information for the 1987
Reclamation Area is contained in Table 5 and Table 9.
Vegetation Cover
Total vegetation cover of the 1987 Reclamation Area was 26.80 percent. Based on
cover sampling, graminoids provided 21.80 percent mean cover (79.88% relative
cover), forbs accounted for 4.00 percent mean cover (13.613'o relative cover),
succulents provided 0.4 percent mean cover (2.37% relative cover), and shrubs
represented 0.6 percent mean cover and 4.14 percent relative cover.
There were two co-dominant plant species in the 1987 Reclamation Area in 1997;
Calamovilla longifo/ia with 5.60 percent mean cover (23.67% relative cover) and
• Bromus marginatus with 6.60 percent mean cover and 21.89 percent relative cover.
Additional significant species included; Bouteloua gracilis with 3.60 percent mean
cover and 14.20 percent relative cover, Ambrosia psilostachya providing 1.80 percent
total cover and 7.10 percent relative cover, Agropyron cristatum at 1.80 percent mean
cover (5.92% relative cover), Sporobolus cryptandrus with 1.80 percent total cover
(5.33% relative cover), Erigeron be/lidiastrum (daisy) with 1.60 percent mean cover
(4.73% relative cover), Andropogon hallii with 1.20 percent total cover (5.33%
relative cover), Artemesia Blifolia with 0.60 percent total cover (4.14% relative cover),
and Agropyron smithii with 1.20 percent total vegetation cover (3.55% relative cover).
Vegetative litter (prior yeazs growth, dead wood, and other biologic organic material)
comprised 59.80 percent ground wver within the 1987 Reclamation Area. Baze soil
comprised 13.40 percent of the ground cover. No rock was encountered during the
cover sampling in the 1987 Reclamation Area.
Herbaceous Production
Total herbaceous production within the 1987 Reclamation Area was the second highest
recorded in 1997, with a value of 79.57 g/m2 (709.3 lb/ac). As in all areas sampled,
perennial grasses dominated herbaceous production, contributing 72.44 g/m2 (645.7
]b/ac) or 91.0 percent of total herbaceous production. No annual grasses contributed to
• herbaceous production in this area. Perennial forbs were present in the production
sampling in this area and contributed 5.20 g/m2 (46.4 lb/ac), accounting for 6.5
-la
