By dividing the soil available by the area requiring soil replaced, we arrive at the 2003 soil balance thickness
of 0.7 feet for the tie-across haul road and 1.45 feet for the mine area. By this calculation we have
determined that SCC has ample topsoil in stockpiles to reclaim the mine at this point.
REVEGETATION
Seeding and Planting
A large area of `D' pit and `A' pit were seeded during 2003. A total of 65 acres were seeded using seed mix
# L See table 03.3 Seed Mix # 1.
Shrub Seedling Planting
SCC established a new shrub site near North side of `D' pit. The site was prepared by roughening the soil
with small dozer push-ups in an attempt to increase snow water retention. This azea was hand seeded with
shrub mix 5. Additional seedlings will be planted during 2004 field season.
Monitoring
ESCO Associates, Inc conducted revegetation monitoring of permanently revegetated areas during the
summer of 2003. The 2003 annual revegetation monitoring report is submitted as a separate document
• (ESCO and SCC, 2004).
Weed Control
Survey of noxious weeds was carried out on the mine permit area during the 2003 field season. Weed
control activities were conducted along the mine entrance road, near Pond 005, Pond 006 and Pond 009.
Canada thistle Cirsium arvense was the target species in control areas. The applied herbicide consisted of
a tank mix of 2.5 gallons of 22K Tordon and 2.5 gallons of 2,4,-D with 250 gallons of water. A spot spray
gun was used to concentrate control activities on target areas. See Herbicide treatment map. The herbicide
mix was determined from Colorado State University extension office information and label instructions. All
pesticides were applied by an EPA certified applicator. These weed control areas will be monitored in 2004
to determine the effectiveness of this treatment.
Wildlife Monitoring
Reporting of eagle nesting and big game (deer and elk) mortality data for the Seneca II-W survey area and a
big game aerial survey is required per Rule 2.04.13 and Permit C-82-057, Tab 23, Page 4. Deer and elk
mortality data for the mine entrance road, tie-across haul road, and Routt County Road 53 aze presented in
Table 03. More 2003 big game aerial survey data, raptor nesting data, and wildlife monitoring discussion is
presented in the Wildlife Monitoring Report.
•
4
