nmin- n
where: n =the actual number of samples taken
and
= ts2
n
min (O.lx)z
where:
t = value from a t table with
a=0.2anddf=n-1.
s~ =sample variance.
s =sample mean.
Because no estimates of variance were available for vegetative cover, production, and woody plant
density a[ [he reclaimed mine site, preliminary sampling was used to obtain a sample variance Cor each
parameter. The first five samples of vegetative cover, production, and woody plant density were used as the
preliminary sample. Variances calculated from these five samples were then used to estimate the number
of samples required to achieve statistical adequacy for each parameter.
Criteria for ascertaining revcgctation success are described in the revegctation plan. Determination
oC success for vegetative cover and herbaceous production require comparison with data from the reference
area on Peabody's Seneca II mine. This data is not yet available and therefore, vegetative cover and
production data are presented for the Meadows No. 1 mine site without reference to success criteria.
Success criteria for woody plant density and plant diversity are described in the revegetation plan.
Accordingly, discussion of these parameters includes a comparison of results to success criteria.

3
