Logan Wash Mine Annual Report
Permit No.: M-1977-424
5.0 Maintenance Activities
Maintenance activities included periodic inspections of mine roads, portals, mine water drainage
systems associated with the retorts and general mine workings, as well as inspection of general
evaporation pond operation, security, and leak detection system. Maintenance activities
conducted at the mine and Evaporation Pond are summarized in the following sections.
5.1 Mine Maintenance
During the reporting period and while site reclamation work was being conducted, GSHI
inspected the Logan Wash Mine site on a weekly basis during April through December.
Inspection of the mine site was typically restricted to the surface areas of the mine benches, roads,
and portal closures. Retort water levels and discharge rates were periodically checked at
appropriate monitoring points at the mine. Underground inspections ceased in the fall of 2003
after the portals of the mine were sealed with earth plugs. No snow removal was conducted
during the 2006-2007 winter.
5.2 Evaporation Pond Maintenance
Maintenance of the Evaporation Pond included inspection of (1) discharge rates to the pond from
the mine retorts, (2) the leak detection vault, (3) security fence and general conditions of the liner
and pond, and (4) installation of egress ladders. The leak detection vault was dry during the
reporting period. Monthly inspections were conducted through December of 2006, in February
2007 and will resume on a monthly basis in April 2007. Liner repair was conducted in October of
2006.
The wildlife egress ladders were constructed at the request of the Division of Wildlife as a result
of a discussion concerning the Logan Wash Mine Amendment No. 1. The ladders were
constructed ofultraviolet-resistant plastic polyethylene fencing and lumber framing.
6.0 Anticipated Reclamation in the Year 2007
Because of a proposed change in land use at the mine that would involve the construction of a
natural gas well on the Lower Bench, OOSI does not anticipate reclamation of additional areas at
the mine site in 2007.
Specific reclamation maintenance activities expected to be conducted during 2007 may consist of
maintenance of existing planted native shrubs on the Upper and Lower Mine Dump slopes.
Maintenance may include installation of irrigation supplements, irrigation with available mine
water and possibly imported water sources, some plant replacement, terrace and pocket repairs,
fertilizing, and mulching where necessary.
GSHI does not intend to reclaim the Evaporation Pond (10 acres) as it is necessary for the
management of retort drainage water from the mine.
7.0 Anticipated Disturbance in the Year 2007
No new disturbance is anticipated to occur in 2007 within the mine permit area associated with
OOSI mine permit activities.
Western Water 8 Land, Inc. 7
